can go all the way back to the republican primary debates. president obama never had the heat put on him because the republicans didn't have their act together with all their infighting and message to america. president obama and the campaign has won the summer. never behind in the polls, had a better convention, no question about it. and in the post convention, it's only gotten worse. now we're down to the debates in denver on wednesday night. the first one is on domestic policy. there are actually some republicans who are putting their credibility on the line, going out on the talking heads saying that mitt romney, after all of these months of missteps and not being sure of where he is on the issues, he's just going to turn it all around and, by the way, they can't explain the math on how they are going to turn it around. get your cell phones out. tonight's question. do you trust mitt romney's and paul ryan's math? text a for yes or b for no. you can go to our blog and leave a comment. we'll bring you the results later on in the show. joining me is howard fineman, nbc news politica

debate last night. the most people who tuned into the debate since 19912. i don't think the obama campaign should feel comfortable taking that for granted. >> well, exactly. i think, you know, lies are believed by some people. i mean, how effective is a good salesman even if he's lying left and right to undecided low-information voters and what kind of poll movement might you expect from this debate, e.j.? >> well, i think sam is right on that and i think when the president, himself, gives the impression that he doesn't really want it that much, and that's when the laid back style i think after an hour and a half where he wasn't willing to fight for his job. >> he looked like it today. today the president came out -- where was that guy last night? >> a day late and a dollar short. >> right. i think he knows that now. you know, the early polling on this showed a couple of things. on the one hand, it did show that most people thought romney won the debate. >> yeah. >> but it also showed that romney didn't appear to add that much to his favorable rating from the debate. just a little

heard this morning about how obama supporters felt was a friend last night after the debate, a friend said that his wife woke up in the middle of the night and she thought she had a nightmare and she actually realized she was remembering the debate. now, the -- it's a true story. now, i think there are things in that debate that will actually come back to haunt mitt romney which i'll get to, but i think president obama was so determined not to make a mistake, not to upset the trajectory of the campaign, not to look like somebody who would offend swing voters, that he went all the way over the other way. and that just didn't work. it may -- but it may work in two respects. one is, i think there are swing voters, particularly women, who found mitt romney too hot. put aside the lies -- >> bully. >> -- and the half true truths. i think they found him too hot, too energetic in an attacking way. that could have repercussions. romney left a lot of stuff on table. unfortunately, president obama didn't answer it last night, but i still think he has real problems on the tax program. it seems li

margin, americans think president obama is going to win this debate and has the upper hand. what about expectations and what about the possibility of romney turning this around? what do you think? >> well, that's clearly their strategy. you have to love governor christie for raising expectations, but he was basically telling the truth. the romney campaign has to have a good performance to change the narrative of a campaign in a spiral to death. can he do it? i don't know. i have not seen any indication from governor romney or his campaign at any moment, whether it was the convention, during the summer, since the convention, that suggests they are able to maximize, you know, an opportunity. so i'm a little suspicious. but the reality is, he's going to come in here with a little lowered expectations and at least in terms of the public opinion polls. but let's be honest. he's a good debater. the problem with governor romney is he tends to also put his foot in his mouth and create these land minds, like the $10,000 bet. which if that happens in this it debate, it will be a disaster. >> is

president obama confront romney on these issues or rely on the debate moderator to do it? how aggressive will the president be? >> i think the debate moderator will get into this. i think the president will push back particularly on some of these budget and tax issues. i have no doubt they are going to get a chance to talk about the auto bailout you were discussing and mitt romney is wanting to let detroit go bankrupt. and i think the president looks towards tomorrow as a great opportunity to have a long conversation with the american people about where we have been, about the tough times we have been through, the progress we're making, and post importantly what we want to do to strengthen manufacturing, create jobs here at home, make sure we have the best education system in the world and give, as i said before, some real strength and security to middle-class families. >> is the 47% comment the game changer so far? does the obama campaign feel this really has put the wind at your back? this is a clear distinction about who cares about the 100% and the 47%. there's new tape from paul rya
